FORMATION

The idea to establish the Association of Nigerian Exporters (ANE) was conceived by some far-sighted Nigerian businesspersons in 1981 as a response to the series of trade inquiries received during their trade missions to Senegal, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Ghana, as well as the subsequent ones to the States of New York, Georgia and Pennsylvania in the United States of America. The Association was formally inaugurated on August 8, 1984.

STATUS

Association of Nigerian Exporters (ANE) is the Apex  Export Sector body within the Nigerian Organized Private Sector (OPS) approved by the Federal Ministry of Justice and incorporated on July 20, 1988 by the then Federal Ministry of Trade as a non-profit organization, Limited by Guarantee for the development and promotion of export in all its ramifications.

ANE is the statutory representative of Nigerian Exporters. In this light, the Association represents the private export sector on the Boards of Government Agencies & Committees responsible for export development and promotion, including the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA), States’ Export Promotion Committees, Nigeria Committee On Trade Procedures (NITPRO), Technical Committee on National Shea Development Programme, etc.

MANDATES

• ANE is the Voice of the Export Sector in Nigeria with national and international jurisdiction.
• ANE is 100% export-specific in registered objectives, setting it apart from other OPS agencies
• ANE is set up to facilitate export policies, export-oriented investment, export farming, export manufacturing, product development, market research, product & service exports, training, etc
• ANE collaborates with trade facilitating ministries, parastatals, embassies and Int’l agencies.

MEMBERSHIP (11^th National Council on Commerce had approved Mandatory Registration of Exporters with ANE and Export Sub-Groups of other OPS Agencies to certify genuine exporters)

ANE is a financial membership organization open to companies and all export-related agencies (public and private) in diverse sectors:- manufacturing, farming, packaging, solid minerals, petrochemical, merchants, consultancy, banks, finance,  insurance, tourism, arts & crafts, conference & trade show management, media, free trade zones, commodity exchange, ports and bonded terminals, freight, licensed warehouses, enterprise zones, incubators, common facility centers, export production villages, NGOs, quality labs, inspection agencies, trade and investment promotion agencies

REGISTERED OBJECTIVES 

ANE has been established with the following statutory objectives:

• To promote export business in all its ramifications
• To raise, maintain, and regulate the standards of export practice in Nigeria.
• To promote professional ethics and efficiency in export administration and practice among members.
• To collate and circulate export statistics and information of all kinds.
• To increase public knowledge and expertise, disseminate and exchange information and ideas on export matters.
• To advise the Federal and State Governments on matters related to export practice in Nigeria and elsewhere.
• To maintain relationships with similar bodies in other countries and enter into Agreement.

STRATEGIES

ANE objectives are pursued through various strategies and activities including:
Policy Advocacy: Facilitating Export policy formulations, and implementation of Export incentives.
Training: Conferences, Seminars, Workshops and skills development.
Product development: Guidance from raw state to finished, competitive, world-standard products.
Market Development: Research, foreign market access, organization and participation in International Trade Fairs/Exhibitions/Trade Missions, and sourcing buyers for Nigerian Exporters.
Information Dissemination: Collation, Publication, Circulation and Broadcast of export Information.
Liaison: Referencing corporate members and liaising with Foreign Embassies, Bilateral/ Multilateral Trade Support Agencies and Nigerian Commercial Consulates abroad on export-oriented matters.
Project Promotion: Export-oriented investment, Export advisory services, Export finance, etc.

MILESTONES

ANE has recorded fundamental achievements since its inception in policy advocacy and programmes.

For instance, ANE championed:

• the Export World Market Tour with NTA and Newswatch to Asia, Africa and North America (1985)
• the Lead Advocate for the establishment of COCOA ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA in 1986;
• the ANE Pioneer President Gen E. Abisoye appointed to reactivate the NEPC in 1988;
• the Lead Advocate for establishment of NEXIM Bank in 1991;
• the Lead Advocate for establishment of Calabar Export Processing Zone project
• the creation of various export incentives in the 80s and 90s through ANE Bankers Committee
• the establishment of AFRICAN WOMEN AGRIBUSINESS NETWORK (AWAN) thru USAID 2001
• the approval of Mandatory Registration of Exporters by 11^th National Council on Commerce
• the approval for establishment of National Permanent Export Pavilion by 11^th National Council on Commerce in 2003 and re-endorsed by 4^th National Council on Commerce & Industry (2011)
• the 1^st Nigerian Export Exhibition & Investment Market (NEXIMART) EXPO in Atlanta in 2005
• the Negotiator for creation of US EXIM ‘$1billion Nigerian Banking Facility in 2006 for AGOA

• the Negotiator with US Govt on June 29-30, 2006 for lifting of ban on Direct Flight between USA & Nigeria
• The Advocate through Amb Andrew Young for Delta Airline operations from Atlanta to Nigeria
• ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN EXPORTERS USA, INC’ registered on May 12, 2010 in Atlanta, under the invitation and approval granted by the Georgia Dept of Economic Development to promote trade and export-oriented investment under Africa Growth & Opportunity Act (AGOA)
• ANE is set to establish Permanent Products Display Pavilion in the USA and India.
• Registration of NEXIMART Pavilion & Export House LLC in Georgia USA on May 10, 2010

INTERNATIONAL MOUs & PROJECTS: In line with its statutory mandate ‘To maintain relationships with similar bodies in other countries and enter into Agreement’, ANE has executed the following MOUs:

• American Shea Butter Institute (ASBI) – Association of Nigerian Exporters (ANE) MoU to promote research, skills development, processing, packaging and marketing of Shea products
• Global Board of Trade (GBOT), now BOURSE AFRICA, Mauritius – Association of Nigerian Exporters (ANE) MoU to promote trading on Commodity Exchanges
• Indo-Africa Chamber of Commerce & Industry (IACCI), Mumbai, India – Association of Nigerian Exporters (ANE) MoU on bilateral trade, joint venture, technology transfer, investment
• ANE- West African Trade & Investment Hub MoU
• Frontal Rain – ANE Mou to promote Export Farm Scheme
• Ryazan Region, Russia –ANE MoU for Trade & Investment Promotion

ACTION PLAN 2021-2030

In this decade, ANE is poised to facilitate sustainable export policies, export-oriented investment, products made from petroleum, service exports, skills development, export farming, export production villages, incubators, common facility centers, enterprise zones, free trade zones; commodity exchanges, warehousing, bonded terminals, permanent products display centers, and adequate promotion of Nigerian exportable products/services through Embassies, trade missions, exhibitions, trade fairs, etc
